International Travel Safety
International travel is important for research and collaboration, however, it is important to understand the risks and safeguard your data while away from WKU.
The U.S. Department of State issues travel advisories, entry requirements, and tips for different countries. Advisories have levels of risks to give travelers increased caution when visiting international countries. These levels start at Level 1- Exercise Normal Precautions to Level 4- Do Not Travel. Before travel please check the Travel Advisories for the country or countries you plan to visit.
These considerations mostly come from research projects, however, depending on the purpose of travel, export control issues could arise. Please evaluate your travel in conjunction with our Export Controls page and report any potential exports to ORI.
If you are traveling internationally with technology that could house sensitive data ensure you are following the International Travel Cybersecurity guidelines.
Only take devices which are necessary for the purpose of your trip, never leave your devices unattended, be sure data is password protected, and report any stolen devices immediately. While most data is now in electronic formats, it is also important to safeguard paper data. If you have data or research information in paper formats, be sure to keep data locked, confidential, and with you at all times.
